Destination Description
Activities and attractions
Montego Bay is where all tourist flights arrive, making it a perfect location for shorter vacations.
Beaches – Negril is home to world famous Seven Mile Beach and is considered the best on the island if not the entire Caribbean. Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and other areas have nice beaches as well.
Shopping – Jamaican crafts are made with style and skill and take the form of resort wear, hand-loomed fabrics, silk-screened articles, wood carvings, paintings, and other fine arts. Jamaican rum is a great take-home gift. So is Tia Maria, Jamaica’s world-famous coffee liqueur. The same goes for the island’s prized coffees (both Blue Mountain and High Mountain) and its jams, jellies, and marmalades. If you shop around you’ll find good deals on such duty-free luxury items as jewelry, cameras, china, Swiss watches, and Irish crystal. The top-selling French perfumes are sold alongside Jamaica’s own fragrances. Cuban cigars are a very popular item.
Golf – Montego Bay is home to the best golfing in Jamaica. Famous courses include White Witch, Cinnamon Hill, and Half Moon.
Dining – Although most resorts are all inclusive, Montego Bay offers some fantastic dining options and cuisine. Probably the most famous Jamaican dish is jerk pork — the ultimate island barbecue. The pork (purists cook a whole pig) is covered with a paste of Scotch bonnet peppers, pimento berries (also known as allspice), and other herbs and cooked slowly over a coal fire. Many aficionados believe the best jerk comes from Boston Beach, near Port Antonio. Jerk chicken and fish are also seen on many menus. The ever-so-traditional rice and peas, also known as \”coat of arms,\” is similar to the moros y christianos of Spanish-speaking islands: white rice cooked with red kidney beans, coconut milk, scallions, and seasonings.
Nightlife – Montego Bay has the best nightlife in Jamaica. Local bars and clubs flourish with variety and energy. Local favorites include the Royal Stocks and Withces nightclub. Jimmy Buffet\’s Margaritaville is popular with tourists.
ROSEHALL: This magnificent great house cost 30,000 pounds sterling to build in 1770 – an enormous sum in those days – and was considered the finest in the island. It was damaged during the 1831 slave rebellion and uninhabited thereafter, perhaps because the ghost of the White Witch of Rosehall was rumoured to be in residence. Stripped of its doors and mahogany staircase it fell into ruin. During the 1960s it was purchased by American millionaire John Rollins and restored at vast expense to its present elegance. Restoration of the great house was part of a development scheme that included the construction of the Holiday Inn and Rosehall hotels. Conducted tours are available.
Dunns River Falls – Ocho Rios’ most famous attraction. Dunns River Falls is a gorgeous set of waterfalls cascading into the Caribbean Sea. Set in a rain forest, the crystal clear Dunns River can be climbed via the rocks and a local guide.
Biking in the Blue Mountains – Enjoy a leisure downhill bicycle ride through a lush tropical rain forest, in the Blue Mountain home to hundreds of species of bird and blossoming plant life. View the world\’s famous Blue Mountain coffee plantations. Conclude your tour with an exhilarating dip at a cool cascading waterfall.
Swim with the Dolphins – Dolphin Cove is a fantastic marine park with several options to swim with the dolpins. Interact and swim with these amazing mammals or watch from the sidelines. Dolphin Cove also has animal exibits featuring snakes, crocodiles, sharks and more.
